On April 14, 2025, the European Commission adopted a draft amendment to the POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) Regulation published on December 4, 2023, targeting stricter restrictions on perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS). The revised regulation will soon enter into force following its publication in the EU Official Journal.
Ti Group Analysis
The amendment includes:
1.Revised Substance Scope:
Renamed from “PFOS and its derivatives” to “PFOS, its salts, and related substances.”
2.Tightened Restriction Limits:
Current Limits:
Substances/mixtures: ≤10 mg/kg
Articles: ≤1000 mg/kg
Textiles/coated materials: ≤1 μg/m²
Proposed Limits:
PFOS and salts: ≤0.025 mg/kg (all categories)
Sum of PFOS-related substances: ≤1 mg/kg
3.Exemption Removals:
Deleted exemption #4 for PFOS as anti-misting agents in non-decorative hard chromium plating (due to available alternatives).
Removed references to CEN analytical methods in exemption #5.
