EU Packaging Directive:
Directive 94/62/EC (Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive) mandates that all packaging and packaging
waste entering the EU market must comply with regulatory controls, regardless of material type or
application (industrial, commercial, retail, household, etc.). This directive covers:
Heavy metal limits (Cd, Pb, Hg, Cr⁶⁺)
Recyclability and recovery requirements
U.S. TPCH Regulations:
Toxics in Packaging Clearing House (TPCH):
Established in 1992 to promote the Model Toxics in Packaging Legislation across 19 U.S. states.
Applies to the entire packaging supply chain, including manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors.
2021 Regulatory Updates:
Added controls for PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances)
Added controls for Phthalates
Original restrictions focused on four heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Hg, Cr⁶⁺).
