Thermal metrology primarily includes the measurement of temperature instruments and thermal property instruments. Temperature metrology covers instruments such as thermometers, thermal secondary instruments, and thermal test equipment. Thermal property metrology involves instruments for measuring thermal conductivity, thermal energy, thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity, specific heat capacity, and thermal radiation characteristics.

In industrial automation processes, temperature, pressure, and flow rate are three commonly used thermal parameters. To align with practical applications, pressure, vacuum, and flow rate are often included in thermal metrology, collectively referred to as "thermal engineering metrology." Sometimes, thermal property metrology is categorized under chemical metrology, in which case thermal metrology is simply referred to as temperature metrology.
