The parameters measured in radio metrology can be broadly categorized into two types:
Parameters characterizing signal features, such as voltage, current, field strength, power, electric field intensity, magnetic field intensity, power flux density, frequency, wavelength, waveform parameters, pulse parameters, distortion, modulation (AM, FM, PM), spectral parameters, and noise.
Parameters characterizing network characteristics, such as lumped circuit parameters (resistance, conductance, reactance, susceptance, inductance, capacitance), reflection parameters (impedance, voltage standing wave ratio, reflection coefficient, return loss), transmission parameters (attenuation, phase shift, gain, delay), and electromagnetic compatibility.
Time and frequency metrology involves parameters related to time and frequency. Time metrology includes moment measurement and time interval measurement. Frequency metrology primarily focuses on measuring the frequency accuracy, long-term stability, short-term stability, and phase noise of various frequency standards (frequency references), crystal oscillators, and frequency sources, as well as the verification or calibration of frequency counters.
